Fourth Africa Sanitation Conference in Dakar, Senegal

Practical Action Eastern Africa Regional Office was represented by Mathew Okello, Project Manager-Urban Services, in the just concluded 4th Africa Sanitation Conference in Dakar, Senegal.

The theme of the conference was “Making Sanitation a Reality for All” and comprised country dialogue forums, inter-ministerial council meetings, thematic sessions and special sessions with a specific focus on sanitation post-2015, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. It ended with commitments dubbed the “Ngor Declaration on Sanitation and Hygiene” through which member states represented on the African Ministerial Council on Water (AMCOW) committed to achieve universal access to sanitation by 2030.

The key issues/ themes that dominated the discussions included:

  • The need to prioritise investment in the sanitation sector,
  • Capacity building among key practitioners and players in the sector,
  • Enhancing  monitoring and evaluation systems, and
  • Supporting the very poor and most vulnerable to climb up the sanitation ladder.
